Who Should Buy It?

Mattress toppers are not an all-in-one solution that is absolutely necessary for every bed. But if you identify yourself in one of the following situations a mattress topper would definitely be worth your consideration.

When you find your mattress too firm

If this is the case, a quality topper can provide a more comfortable, softer sleeping experience, especially for those who need a less firm surface to get a good night's sleep.

If you have no control over the surface that you sleep on

If you spend a lot of time sleeping at hotels, college dormitories, care facilities, or other away-from-home places, you may already know those accommodations don't always satisfy you.

And the worst part is that there is little you can do about it.

This is when a topper can come to your rescue as it can add more comfort, and even support in some cases.

You don't like the mattress on your RV bed

Though your RV might not be a permanent place for sleeping, their quality is still way below that of a traditional bed. Beds on RVs usually use cheaper and less comfy mattresses with minimal support and comfort.

Adding a mattress topper is a simple way to significantly improve those sleeping surfaces, given the restrictions we have.

You don't have a bed for guests

Mattress toppers are a great idea for couches, floors, or any place you usually reserved for guests. Though it might not be as comfortable as a typical bed, it's still better than a bare couch.

When you and your partner prefer a different level of comfort

In this case, a topper is an obvious choice if you don't want to buy a dual-firmness mattress. It can change the firmness on one side only so that both of you can have a comfortable sleep.

Things to Consider About Mattress Toppers

Material

Different materials will result in different sleeping experiences for you.

For example, latex and memory foam - which form a contour closely to your body - help improve spinal alignment and relieve pressure.

On the other hand, feather and wool models don't conform as much as them, and as a result, create less resistance when you move in your sleep. And those toppers also sleep cooler.

You should always research different types of toppers on the market before buying. This will ensure the topper you get meets your preferences and needs.

Firmness

The general rule is that firmer mattress toppers are a great choice when you think your mattress is too soft while softer models work pretty well on firm surfaces.

On the other hand, if you think the firmness of your mattress is already perfect, getting a medium-firm topper can preserve its surface while causing no change in your preferred firmness.

Also, remember that a topper is also able to increase the firmness of an old mattress.

Thickness

The usual thickness of mattress toppers falls between 1 and 4 inches. It depends on the surface of your mattress. For instance, when you find your mattress too firm, get a thick topper to adjust the level of comfort.

Thin toppers are ideal when you need some minor changes. And thick latex, memory foam, and foam models usually sleep hotter than thin toppers.

Density

Just like the thickness, you should also pick the density based on performance factors and your needs.

Memory foam mattress toppers with a high density provide greater edge support and conforming than low-density models. However, they also result in more odor, sleep hotter, and not the best choice for sex.

Durability

Though how long a topper lasts depends on its specific model, most wool, memory foam, and latex models are considered more durable and can serve you well for many years without significant indenting or sagging.

On the other hand, fiber and feather toppers have below-average lifespans.

Motion isolation

Foam and latex toppers can absorb and isolate motion in certain areas on your mattress. This can be a godsend in reducing sleep disruptions. By comparison, wool, fiber, and feather models provide only a little motion isolation.

Allergy

Some materials like leathers and latex may cause allergies for some people. Other models, like wool and fibers, are pretty safe for most people.

The Tempur-Pedic Mattress Topper Review

Tempur foam material

Made from the patented Tempur foam, this has a 3-inch mattress topper, allowing for a luxurious, plush feel all over.

The use of this proprietary material means that Tempur-Pedic has used a custom blend of comfort that is not made public. This can be traced back to the original research Tempur has done for NASA in the past.

This topper has a medium-firm feel

This topper has a medium-firm feel

If you have already tried a few Tempur foams, you will know that the foam of the Tempur-Pedic topper is kind of slow to responsed. It doesn't leave a lasting, deep impression on when you put a weight on it.

Though the surface feels like that of a true memory model, it's not dense or unsupportive like a hard surface. It shifts pretty well with movements and doesn't level off.

Removable cover

Tempur-Pedic has used a knitted polyester blend to make the cover of this topper, delicately stitching it with its logo and small hexagons along the top. This choice of material makes the topper moisture warding and breathable.

The bottom is thick and has a canvas-like look, enabling enough grip against the mattress.

This cover is allergen and dust-mite resistant, providing both comfort and protection. Additionally, you can remove it with ease for laundering.

To create easy airflow, there is a fine mesh made from polyester encasing the Tempur foam. It also behaves as an extra layer between the cover and the foam.

You can find well-sewn seams on it, which don't pull or pucker. Unlike other covers with the same feel, the one that goes with the Tempur-Pedic topper isn't easy to snag.

Zipper

The lay-flat zipper goes along the entire side of the topper to provides easy removal.

The thin mesh casing and thicker bottom mean you can pull the case off the topper easily.

You will be impressed with how easily you can get the cover back on. In many toppers we have reviewed, there is a common issue with foam products when the case needs to go back on. It's because foam toppers are usually designed for sitting snug in the protective covering.

But with unique design from Tempur-Pedic, the cover can stretch enough to fit firmly without any hitch when replacing.

Sleep quality

After having spent some nights with this memory foam mattress topper, I found myself actually sleeping deeply. And this was a lovely surprise.

I thought that even my pillow couldn't prevent my hips from sinking too deeply into the topper and stress my lower back area.

But it didn't happen at all.

The information in my sleep tracker points out deep cycles, indicating a proper sleep. When I woke up, there was also no residual stiffness, unexpected pain, or any unnatural feeling.

Heat retention

This is a weak point of the Tempur-Pedic mattress topper: it tends to sleep warm compared to cooling mattress toppers.

A warm room is usually absolutely fine for me any night, but with this topper, I need to turn on the AC or an overhead fan for the entire night. Otherwise, I might risk waking up covered in sweat.

This is not a problem for some people, especially on cooler nights, but heat retention is a big issue that hot sleepers also need to know about any mattress topper. In this case, you may want to try the Tempur-Pedic mattress topper cooling version.

Movement

Although the sheets fit firmly over both the mattress and topper, the Tempur-Pedic topper still moves a little. You may not notice this without having slept on it for a few days, which will result in some inches over on one side.

The main culprit is the material used to make the bottom, which is more abrasive and thicker and doesn’t create enough friction in order to keep the topper in place.

But don't worry too much, it doesn't pull up the sheets at all, and you can shift it back easily with a slight tug.

Care

You may already know this, but one of the most important things about foam is that you should never wash it. And this, of course, also applies to the Tempur-Pedic mattress topper.

Water can break into its cellular structure and cause some unexpected damage. Additionally, you will have an extremely hard time drying wet foam completely, and the moisture left behind can easily mold and cause mildew.

So how to clean memory foam toppers?

If you need to clean a dirty spot on your topper, follow this instruction: use as little moisture and water as possible, then dry it completely.

However, as we have mentioned, the cover is washable. You can wash it with cold water and then tumble dry (never dry clean it).

I have washed it many times with a pile of cotton sheets. The cover turned out to be cleaned and dried well.

Sizes

You can find this topper at various retailers such as Bed Bath & Beyond with a wide range of size options, from twin, Queen to CA King. This includes both double-sized and XL options, which other companies often leave out in their product catalogs.

It also comes with a compact size, making it a perfect choice for recreational vehicles, overnight visitors, or camping. Or you can treat it as an extra for more versatility, meaning you can have the comfort you like with you all the time, either at home or on the go.

Price, Sleep Trial, and Warranty

Tempur-Pedic is very generous when it comes to warranty.

It offers a 25-year limited warranty, which covers materials, workmanship, and manufacturer's defects. The full warranty of the foam core lasts for 10 years, and this duration for the casing is 2 years.

This alone speaks well of the confidence Tempur-Pedic has in the quality of their products.

Due to regular wear and weight compression, a mattress topper can usually last to 8 or 10 years. But with this model, you can also have the same sleep experience for a long time with a single investment in the beginning.

But keep in mind that the company offers no sleep trial, which also means you can't return it.

Final words

From our Tempur-Pedic mattress topper review, you can see that it's a memory foam model designed for customers under 230 pounds. It provides a medium-firm feel with a 3-inch thickness.

After all, Tempur-Pedic is a premium product from a reputable company. As long as you aren't a hot sleeper and don't mind its price tag, it will be worth your investment.
