Performance
You won't regret getting a Shark Apex AZ1002 vacuum because it is by far one of the most powerful vacuums with advanced technology that makes it top of our list. We have tested the product on several surfaces, bare floors, tiles, carpets, rugs, and upholstery. The vacuum performed well on all types of surfaces, dealing with them with just a few swipes. The DuoClean Technology shines in our tests, with efficient cleaning performance on both carpets and hardwood floors.
Our favorite thing about the Shark Apex vacuum is the dual brush rolls and the ability to detach the canister for thorough cleaning under low furniture. The powered lift-away feature lets us use the strong suction power in all surface modes: bare floor, low pile carpet, and thick carpet modes. The lower-end models can only clean in hard floor mode after you remove the canister. The consistent, powerful suction makes the Shark apex vacuum stand out from other general upright models.
Design
It only takes us less than three minutes to put together the Shark apex vacuum AZ1002. The design is modern and sleek, which is suitable for all types of homes. You can switch between different surface modes: thick carpet, low tile rug, and hard floor cleaning.
The Shark apex vacuum can be used as an upright vacuum and a lift-away portable stick vacuum. The dust cup opens easily with a button, which is more convenient than other Shark models that require you to snap the handles in and out. We all love one-push technology that helps make cleaning a more enjoyable task.
Attachments
The shark apex vacuum cleaner comes with useful additional accessories that help you clean more efficiently. The long crevice tool lets you clean hard-to-reach areas in every part of your house. If you own pets, the power pet brush and pet multi-tool will allow you to clean all pet hair from carpeted stairs and cushioned furniture at ease. The upholstery tool is best for cleaning delicate objects such as pillow cushions or drapes. All attachments can be stored on the main unit which helps you save more space and prevents you from losing any attachments by accident.
Build Quality
The Shark apex upright vacuum weighs a bit more than the average upright vacuums, at 16 pounds in upright mode. Although it is slightly heavier, the Shark apex vacuum cleaner is sturdier than other Shark vacuums in our tests.
This model comes with swivel steering that provides impressive maneuverability around tight corners and furniture. While other vacuums easily tip over on the stairs, this well-built model is steady in portable mode with no wobbling. The handle features fingertip one-touch controls that lets you switch from hard floor to low pile and high pile carpeted floors.
Dust Capacity
The Shark Apex duoclean powered lift away dust canister holds up to 0.88 dry quarts, which is 0.83 liters. The dust cup detaches easily with a push of a button, which is more convenient than other upright models. You should empty the dirt cup and give it a full clean regularly, depending on how often you're vacuuming.
LED headlights
There are two rows of LED lights, which allow visibility in the dark and helps you track any missed dirty spot. This feature is ideal for a thorough clean of the house.
Noise Reduction
Vacuum noise can be irritating for you, your family members, and your pets. We all know how scared some cats can get when you start vacuuming. The Shark apex powered lift away has noise reduction technology, so the noise issue is fixed. We can assure you that this is one of the quietest vacuum cleaners in the market. This feature is best for cleaning while your family members are sleeping.

Now you can use the ZS362 to clean cars, curtains, ceilings, and stairs at ease. This portable handheld vacuum is Shark's lightest pod which helps you clean those areas above ground with no problem.
DuoClean and Zero M technology
Like other Apex vacuums, the ZS362 features some of the most advanced Shark technology of all time: DuoClean and Zero M system. With DuoCLean technology, the soft brush will tackle smaller dust while the tougher brush removes any attached debris in your carpet.

Weight
The Shark Apex vacuum AZ1002 is the heaviest among the three models, which weighs a total of 16 pounds in full upright mode. The LZ601 weighs 10.7 pounds while the ZS362 only weighs 10 pounds. If you love a sturdy full upright vacuum, we highly recommend the Shark AZ1002 because of its optimal suction power and premium build quality. If you want something more lightweight and portable, the LZ601 or the ZS362 will suit your needs.
HEPA Filter
While the AZ1002 and the LZ601 feature HEPA filter and Anti Allergen complete seal system, the ZS362 model does not. If you or your family member suffer from asthma or any type of allergies, we believe that a HEPA filter will be an essential feature for your home.
Self-Standing
Unlike our Editor's choice and Runner up (AZ1002 and LZ601), the DuoClean ZS362 cannot stand on its own. This model requires a wall to lean on or you would have to lay it on the floor since it’s too top heavy to stand. This might cause inconvenience if you need to stop the machine mid-cleaning and pick up large pieces on the floor for instance.
The AZ1002 is an upright vacuum so standing is no problem. With the LZ601, there are retractable wheels that help them stand on the floor. In our opinion, the LZ601 gets the best of both worlds (upright and stick vacuum combination).
Lift-Away Technology
We love that the AZ1002 features a Powered Lift-Away technology, which is not available in the other two models. Powered Lift-Away means you can use strong suction power in all surface modes: bare floor, low pile carpet, and thick carpet modes.
The LZ601 features Lift-Away technology where you can detach the pod with an extendable hose and other attachments to clean above-ground areas. You can convert the ZS362 into a handheld vacuum without any integrated hose for extended reach.
Suction Power
The winner of this feature is the shark apex-powered lift away AZ1002. With suction going up to 1350 watts and 11.3 amps, the machine is exceptionally great at cleaning all types of surfaces. While most stick vacuums cannot provide the suction power of an upright vacuum, the LZ601 delivers sufficient performance on both bare floors and carpets. The ZS362 rated last in the suction power category, however, they provide decent cleaning for small homes.
Dirt Capacity
As an upright vacuum, the Shark AZ1002 features the biggest dirt cup measuring at 0.88 quarts. The LZ601 holds up to 0.68 quarts and the ZS362 has a larger capacity of 0.74 quarts. If you care about trips to the trash can, you should consider getting a vacuum with a bigger dirt capacity.
Attachments
There are a variety of extra tools to help you clean different parts of the house. If you are a pet owner, you would love the AZ1002's pet power brush or the ZS362's pet multi-tool. The ZS362's crevice tool is the shortest among the three models, but they include a precision duster to help you clean delicate surfaces.
Shark Apex AZ1002: 12" crevice tool, pet power brush
Shark Apex LZ601: Pet Multi-Tool, Accessory Holder, Duster Crevice tool
Shark DuoClean ZS362: 5" crevice tool, Pet multi-tool, Precision duster
Our top pick: Shark Apex vacuum upright with powered lift away technology AZ1002. This upright model features powered lift away technology, HEPA filter and Anti allergen sealing system with the most robust power suction.
Who Should Buy The Shark Apex Vacuum?
You might wonder if the Shark apex vacuum is the right cleaner for your home. Let's look at some of the best features and attributes that make this model win out over other products. After a few tests against similar vacuum models, I believe that this upright vacuum suits every type of home.
The Shark apex vacuum is powerful, versatile, and great for cleaning big houses. Even though the product is available at a high price, it includes one of the most advanced features you won't find on other budget models.
Pet owners: If you own a long-haired pet, you might want to consider getting a Shark Apex DuoClean powered lift away with Zero M technology. The Zero M feature allows the machine to get rid of all tangled pet hair around the brush roll.
Allergy sufferers: People with allergies will love the Shark apex vacuum. With an anti-allergy complete seal and HEPA, this model can get rid 99% of fine dust and trap them inside the unit. People who suffer from allergic reactions and asthma can use this product without worrying about any allergy attacks.
What are the Shark Apex Vacuum's Benefits?
Let's look at some of the benefits of buying the Shark Apex vacuum.
- • Extraordinary Performance: The Shark apex vacuum beats many competitors in our cleaning tests. It scored a 99.7%, which is one of the most impressive performances in all of our tests up to date.
- • Great for allergy sufferers: HEPA filter and Anti-allergen sealing technology keeps all dust and particles inside the main vacuum, keeping a clean environment while you clean.
- • Versatility: One of the best things about the Shark apex vacuum is the ability to switch from a heavy upright vacuum into a portable stick vacuum with a Lift-Away feature. Having several vacuum cleaners for different cleaning purposes is useful but having one vacuum that does all the jobs is better.
- • Save space: The machine can store different attachments on the main unit, which helps save more space.
- • Excellent choice for pet owners: While other vacuums struggle with long pet hair wrapping around their brush roll as the motor runs, this Shark Apex vacuum will untangle the pet hair for you. A great feature that all pet owners will love.
- • No maintenance costs: With the Shark apex vacuum, you get what you paid for. The original price tag might be a little bit higher than other upright models, however, you won't have to spend a penny for maintenance costs. It comes with the top-of-the-line build quality and maximum durability. Please make sure that you keep the filters clean to maintain the machine in good shape.
- • Multi-floor purposes: Do you have different surfaces in your home? The Shark apex vacuum is designed to tackle any mess from any floor type: from bare floors (wood or tiles) to low and high tile carpet, the apex vacuum will clean everything with a switch.
Shark Apex Vacuum: Advanced Technology
Powered Lift-Away
The one feature that stands out in our Shark apex vacuum reviews is the powered lift away technology. This feature lets you remove the canister from the vacuum, which means you can reach the cleaner head to several above-flooring areas or hard-to-reach places.
The bulky upright vacuum is transformed into a lightweight stick vacuum with the brush roll remaining working in full power. You can deep clean the stairs, your car, upholstery, and underneath furniture with the Powered Lift-Away setting. For the best result in removing stubborn pet hair, there are several helpful pet attachments that come with the Shark Apex Duoclean powered lift away, such as a pet multi-tool, crevice tool, and a deep cleaning pet tool.
Some previous Shark models didn't include a Powered Lift-Away setting. Some of these models have the standard Shark Lift-Away technology. So what are the differences between Powered Lift-Away and Regular Lift-Away?
Powered Lift-Away: This mode lets you use the floor nozzle attached to the wand, which means there is power sent directly to the brush roll in lift-away mode. This feature lets you keep the suction power consistently on other surfaces while using it as a stick vacuum. The brush roll is ideal for cleaning tangled pet hair, cars and upholstery, without losing any suction power.
Non-Powered Lift-Away: This setting doesn't allow you to use the floor nozzle attached to the wand. The suction power on the detached unit won't be as strong as the upright vacuum. However, compared to other traditional upright vacuums, this innovative technology is worth considering if you want a versatile, 2-in-1 vacuum for your house.
DuoClean Technology
Shark's DuoClean technology is one feature that you will love from the first try. DuoClean means there are two types of brush rolls in the cleaner head to maximize cleaning efficiency. The soft roller is at the front of the cleaner head, and a standard bristled roller is at the center of the cleaning head. This technology helps the vacuum pick up everything it passes on any surface: carpet, hard floors, and tiles, to name but a few.
The Shark apex vacuum comes with DuoClean technology which allows it to pick up any messes of all sizes. Both soft and regular brush rolls spin at different spinning speeds. If you have hardwood floors or tiles, you should choose the softer brush roll to pick up more dirt. For carpets, a harder bristled brush roll is better at removing stuck-on dirt.
The soft brush roll is best at getting rid of larger debris and attached dust on hard surfaces. On carpeted floors, the standard brush roller helps you perform deep-clean without damaging the surface. With Shark apex vacuum, you don't have to purchase two types of vacuums or different cleaner heads to switch from cleaning low pile carpet to bare floors.
Zero-M
If you want a vacuum that can remove all pet hair, the shark apex vacuum's Zero M technology will come in handy. Zero M stands for "Zero Maintenance" and it is unique to only Shark vacuum models. This technology adds a row of protrusions on top of the cleaning nozzle to stop long pet hair from getting wrapped around the brush roll. The untangle pet hair will go directly from the brush roll into the dust bin.
As many homeowners experience difficulty with tangled pet hair around the cleaning head, Zero M makes this problem go away. You don't have to spend time digging into the cleaning head and trying to cut strands of tangled hair from the machine. Plus, the Zero M technology prevents any damage to the brush roll when hair gets stuck inside.
This technology gives you an excellent cleaning experience and a clean, hair-free home. Any pet owner like myself will rate the Shark apex vacuum high on our list thanks to this feature.
Conclusion
Our best pick of the Shark apex vacuum reviews is the Shark Apex AZ1002 DuoClean Lift-Away Upright Vacuum because it is one of the most versatile vacuum cleaners in the market. If you are looking for a robust upright vacuum with multiple accessories and innovative technology, you can't go wrong with the Shark AZ1002.
The DuoClean and Zero M technology make this apex vacuum stand out from the rest. This Shark apex vacuum is also an excellent option for anyone who owns furry pets. We hope you enjoy reading our review, and let us know which one is your favorite Shark vacuum.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
- 01. How to Store Shark APEX Tools?
-
Storing accessories on the Shark APEX vacuums is very simple. Most models will come with an accessory holder that you can clip to the side of your vacuum. Then, all you have to do is to slot the tools onto the holder and voila.
If you lost or don’t have the holder, it shouldn’t be too much of an issue to find a place to store the tools. Most of them are small. You can just put them into a closet or a cupboard somewhere. As long as the place is cool, dry, and dark, it will do.
- 02. What Is the Difference Between Shark APEX and DuoClean?
-
This is a very common misconception. They’re not related. Shark APEX is the name of the series of vacuum cleaners, while DuoClean is the name for the advanced floor head of the vacuum.
A DuoClean floor head has two brush rolls instead of one. This significantly improves its cleaning performance and allows the vacuum to clean quicker and more efficiently.
Meanwhile, the Shark APEX is simply the name of the vacuum.
- 03. How to Clean a Shark APEX Filter?
-
Every Shark vacuum’s filter can be cleaned in the same manner. They are also very easy to clean, so don’t worry about this too much.
All Shark APEX vacuums — regardless of model — come with a HEPA filter and two conventional filters (a felt filter and a foam filter). The HEPA filter does not need cleaning (it’s not washable anyway). When it becomes too dirty, you can just replace it with a new one. The same cannot be said for the conventional filters, however, which need regular cleaning to work effectively.
First thing to do is to power off the vacuum and pull the power plug from the outlet. Then, empty the dirt canister and make sure that there are no clogs and obstructions.
Once that’s done, you can remove the filters from their compartments inside of the vacuum. As for how to do that, you can refer to your user manual. When you have removed all of the filters and got them in front of you, the cleaning can commence.
You can soak the foam filter in soap water, then scrub it gently to dislodge all of the dirt and dust. Rinse off the soap and allow it to air dry for 24 hours.
The felt filter is more delicate than the foam filter, so it shouldn’t be washed. Instead, use a soft brush to wipe the accumulated dirt.
Replace the filters back into their places when you’re done.
How to Store Shark APEX Tools
Storing accessories on the Shark APEX vacuums is very simple. Most models will come with an accessory holder that you can clip to the side of your vacuum. Then, all you have to do is to slot the tools onto the holder and voila.

- 04. How to Lift Away the Shark APEX Upright with DuoClean?
-
If you got the APEX upright vacuum, you may be wondering how to use the famed “Lift-Away” mode that virtually every Shark vacuum has. It is pretty easy, actually.
Look for a handle at the top of the dust cup. Right next to it, you will see a button. This button, when pressed, will detach the pod from the vacuum.
While holding onto the handle, press the button with your thumb. Then, step on the floor nozzle (gently) and pull the pod from its place. It should slide right out.
Once you get the pod out, there is a sliding collar on the suction wand that holds it in place. Slide the collar downward and the wand will be free.
You can now use your upright vacuum as a handheld!
- 05. How Much Does a Shark APEX Cost?
-
This depends on the model you’re going to get. If you want to get an upright vacuum, there is the Shark APEX DuoClean AZ1002. Right now, you can have it for anywhere between $200 to $250. It depends on your outlet.
On the other hand, if you need a stick vacuum, there is the Shark APEX UpLight.
One issue, though: there are three different Shark APEX UpLight models. You have the APEX UpLight LZ600, LZ601, and LZ602.
In case you’re wondering, no, there aren’t many differences between them. All three are virtually identical in terms of design and performance. They are separated only by three things: coloring and accessories.
The UpLight LZ600, which comes in an elegant purple color (called “Magenta”), is currently sold for around $275. Unfortunately, due to low demand, it seems like this version has been discontinued. You can still find plenty of deals from independent sellers and third-party stores like Amazon, Walmart, and Target, though.
As for the UpLight LZ601, you can differentiate it from the others with its vibrant orange color (called “Terracotta”). At the moment of writing, it is sold on Amazon for $300.
This model is the most popular, too, due to the inclusion of the Self-Cleaning Pet Power Brush. It is an accessory that can help you clean pet hair faster and more efficiently. We highly recommend this model for pet owners.
The third and last model — the LZ602 — comes in blue (“Forest Mist Blue”). It has the same price tag as the LZ601, which is around $300. In terms of popularity, it is only a tad lower than the LZ601. That is because it comes with a Pet Multi-Tool, which isn’t as great a pet hair accessory as the Self-Cleaning Pet Power Brush.
Altogether, if you want a Shark APEX UpLight for cheap, get the LZ600. Though discontinued, you can have it for less than the other two. If you want to pay the full price, we recommend getting the LZ601. It gives you more bang for your buck.
